Mr. Kan Hing-Fook was born in a family of a Hong Kong merchant in 1921. He studied in Shanghai when he was young.
- In the 1940s, Kan Hing-Fook went to study painting in Shanghai School of Fine Arts under the famous masters Liu Haisu and Zhang Chongren, the world famous sculpture artist. He met Liu Xucang, his classmate and practiced photography with him in Zhang Chongren's studio. Influenced by Liu, he started to learn more about paintings. In 1948, he came back to Hong Kong and Macau to take part in the local photographic activities, thus becoming a senior member of the Hong Kong Photographic Association. And he obtained the honor of being a cornerstone member of Photographic Society Of America when he was 30 years old.
- In 1951, he got his first award in the International Photographic Salon in Singapore. That was his early work, March Forward, which he took in 1946 in Macau. Since then he has kept on taking photos.
- In 1952, his black-and-white photo Gateway to Freedom got the Bronze Medal Award of the VII International Salon Photographic Exhibition of Hong Kong Photographic Society.
- In 1953, his Water Palette got the Gold Medal Award of the VIII International Salon Photographic Exhibition of Hong Kong Photographic Society. It was a breakthrough for a Chinese to get a gold medal award on such a photographic exhibition in Hong Kong. It was really a great news in Hong Kong photographic circle.
- From 1952 on, his Hermitage, Gateway to Freedom, Water Palette and Tomatoes had been appraised and chosen as "The Best Print of the Year" for four consecutive years by all the members of Hong Kong Photographic Society. So, he became so famous that he wouldn't take part in the competitions from then on. He became an international appraisal specialist to take part in those important international photographic competitions.
- In 1958, as a specially invited representative from Hong Kong, he came to Beijing to take part in the society's forum of Chinese Photographers Association. Later, he became an appraisal member to take part in the national as well as international photographic exhibitions for a long time. He has held photographic exhibitions for many times and published many photographic works, including those important ones, such as:
- In 1955, he held his personal photographic exhibition in Macau Salon Photographic Institute. Later, in the same year, this exhibition was invited and moved to Louisiana National Artistic Museum in America to be exhibited in the USA.
- In 1956, his photos were published on the South Africa newspaper Die Transvaler on a special page to introduce Kan's photographic works.
- From 1956 to 1957, his photos, such as Love of Ocean, were published one after the other on China Pictorial. These were the first earliest photographic works from Hong Kong being introduced to New China at that time by Chinese media.
- In 1959, Kan Hing-Fook together with Liu Huaiguang and Zhang Ruzao held the first color photographic exhibition in Hong Kong.
- From 1979 to 1981, he held his personal photographic exhibitions in Canton, Shanghai and Beijing one after the other.
- In 1980, 1987 and 1998, he published his Kan Hing-Fook's Photographic Works for three times.
- In 1993, Kan Hing Fook together with Chan Fou-li, He Fan and Zhang Wuchang jointly held the photographic exhibition Times in the Past.
- From 2000 to 2005, Kan Hing Fook together with Lian Dengliang, Huang Guiquan jointly held the exhibitions The Three on the March, Ode of Sunset, Merry Old Ages in Beijing, and then these exhibitions were moved to be exhibited in more than ten cities and provinces throughout China.
- In 2000, Kan advocated and helped to publish the grand-scale historical pictorial Spring and Autumn of Photographic Arts (Hong Kong Photography 1900-2000), including many of Kan Hing-Fook's representative works.
- From 1938, Kan Hing-Fook never stopped to carry out photographic works. He went throughout China and the world, taking those social documentary photos in his early days, and then he devoted all his time in creating artistic scenery and produced many fine works. Among them, the photo Water Palette was chosen by the National Cultural Promoting Commission of the Ministry of Culture to be the classical photographic work in China in the 20th century.

Biography of a Professional Photographer
I started my professional photographer's
career in the mid-70's under the tutorship of several
renowned masters. Beginning as an assistant and working
my way up to be Photographer-In-Charge of a famous
magazine, I had accumulated invaluable experience,
which was pivotal in my career development as a professional
photographer.
Since opening my own Sandy Lee Studio
in 1979, I have provided quality service to many international
advertising agencies and clients in Hong Kong and
South-east Asia. Through the years, I have won many
international and Hong Kong awards, such as CLIO Gold,
4A's Gold, Best Award from NEW YORK A.C. and Asia
Media & Marketing, to name a few.
As my personal taste inclines, my focus
is on still photography, which offers me tremendous
room for creativity. Masterful utilization of lighting
and lenses not only brings to life a creative's original
ideas, it also creates unique visual effects and artistic
beauty.
With the advent of new technology, particularly
in digital photography, I constantly strive to upgrade
my equipment and at the same time sharpening my professional
skills for the new millennium. This is my ideal: "Professional
photography is not just to sell products, it is also
an art per se".
